For god’s sake MAC people, stop using bloated font management apps and use Linotype FontExplorer!

Just a quick rant with a long title.

If I hear another designer saying how their font management software crashed their systems or bogged them down like the mud in WWI, I’ll slap them. Okay I was one of them too.

Of all the problems a designer faces on a daily basis, font issues have to be the most annoying and frustrating. I have never known trouble like it. That familiar refrain; ‘Christ, there’s another Helvetica in the system, abort, abort!’ rings out in every design studio.

I used Extensis Suitcase in some of my first jobs as a designer. Hated it from the minute I started using it. Slow, cumbersome, crash prone. Maybe it’s got better now, but I am not willing to try.

Then I moved on to FontAgent Pro from Insider Software. Much better but still, how sloooooooow.

In desperation I stopped using these and went with Apple’s FontBook, that little innocuous app that comes with OSX. It was fine to use and at least it didn’t interfere with my work. Then I got bored and wanted more bling and bit more power.

Looking for fonts on Linotype, I saw that you could download a FREE app called FontExplorer X .

Well to say I didn’t look back was an understatement. It puts these bloated pieces of font software to shame.

FontExplorer is developed by Linotype, a very respectable type company. It’s stable and fast, and even better, the auto activation works beautifully with Adobe Creative Suite and Quark.

Having an uncluttered interface, FontExplorer makes it easy to categorise and sort your fonts into custom folders.

Oh and I’ll say it again, it’s FREE.

Rant over.

Feel your pain. Have switched to Font explorer and not looking back either. Suitcase really does suck. He he BTW why does your site change so much? Like it a lot now though.
